The UK and US have concluded a significant trade agreement that will maintain no duties on UK pharmaceutical shipments entering the American market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to increase funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment secures that duties on these crucial products will remain at zero for a timeframe of three years.

This deal comes after earlier warnings to significantly raise tariffs on patented pharmaceutical products, with increases mentioned up to one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the UK reinforces the global environment for new treatments and establishes much-needed equity to American-British drug exports," a release noted.

Commercial Impact

Pharmaceuticals are one of the UK's biggest goods shipped to the America, which is by far the biggest market for leading UK drugmakers.

Statistics reveal that in the 12 months prior to last September, the UK shipped medicines totaling billions to the US. This amount made up a significant portion of British export trade in that period.

"This agreement secures jobs, boosts funding and sets the stage for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Detailed British Pledges

The deal includes several key commitments from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the cost ceiling at which it deems new medicines to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to double overall health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount manufacturers must refund to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. In the past, repayments exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

This agreement comes amid a protracted row between the drug companies and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were heightened by claims that American customers were paying several times more for the identical medicines than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while substantial funding commitments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS needed to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its resources over the last ten years.
