Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
